Yard and Garage Sales in Los Angeles County

Hosting a yard or garage sale is a great way to earn extra money by selling unwanted household items. However, without proper regulation these sales can present various challenges. Poor planning or holding sales too frequently can lead to street congestion and disrupt the surrounding area.

Yard and Garage Sales in Los Angeles County

To address these concerns, county ordinances impose restrictions on when and how yard and garage sales can be conducted.

The Los Angeles County Ordinance regulates yard and garage sales in unincorporated areas of the county. According to County Ordinance 22.140.620, yard sales are only permitted on properties with an existing residential use.

Additionally, only the property owner or tenant may conduct a yard or garage sale, which is permitted between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

Sales are limited to second-hand household or personal items owned by the property owner or tenant. All items must be displayed in the front or side yard without encroaching on any public right-of-way.

To promote the sale, no more than two signs are allowed, and they must be placed on the property where the sale is taking place. Signs may be put up no earlier than one day before the sale and must be removed immediately after it ends.
